Interview: Astrix

Astrix has been one of the leading trance producers and DJs in the world for more than a decade, carrying his musical message of psychedelic emotional uplifting trance to every corner of the world, to the biggest urban clubs and far away beaches, huge festivals and underground events. Devoted to his art and a true perfectionist, Astrix is known for his massive hypnotic explosive sets on the dancefloor and for his precise detailed production in the studio. Both always laced with tons of feel and musicality. His music has been topping the charts and his albums are considered milestones.

Hey Astrix! How are you?
Everything is just fine. I’m finally having a sort of week off after a very productive and busy year and a crazy end of the year. It was a great year for me – I released my new album “He.art” after a very long creative journey, and the responses were overwhelming and humbling. I played all around the world, taking part in our tribal dance rituals, absorbing and spreading good energies. Experienced some great festival gatherings all around the globe, seeing so many happy faces, and people from all walks of life, places, ages, connect together around the music. Met a lot of old and new friends. All energized to start a new year with a lot to do!
What do you do to stay energized all the time to keep up with your gigs?
It’s the gigs that keep me energized!!! Every gig gives me energy! Seeing people connect with my music and with each other through my music; The different sceneries, jungles, beaches, urban settings; The different cultures, languages; The different art and ways of expression. It all enriches me. It all connects into one big trip, and always with an interesting soundtrack. These energies keep me going and fuel my creative process.

What does an average day look like for you? And what does a perfect day look like?
My perfect day starts with spending some time with my kid, being part of him experiencing things for the first time both gives me a great perspective about the world and is great fun. Then studio time – switching the world off, cutting out all digital communications, and immersing myself in creation.
You have been performing at Psy-Fi. What are the most amazing things you experienced here?
Psy-Fi was a very special experience for me. The energy of the location is very unique, almost magical. It also sort of closes the summer festival season in Europe, and a lot of the amazing energies that have accumulated during the summer are heading for a final meeting in Psy-Fi. And it’s in Holland, not too far from Amsterdam. A country and city that I have very strong personal connection to, and are a big part of psychedelic culture and history. What can go wrong? 🙂
What is the latest project you’ve been working on? And are you going to show us something new at Psy-Fi 2017?
I’m always working on many things. But lately it’s been my collaboration with Shpongle that is planned to be included in the upcoming sixth Shpongle album and is a very special thing for me as I’m a die hard Shpongle fan. Kind of a dream come through. Me and Ace Ventura are working hard on our debut Alpha Portal album – a full psytrance experience. And there’s always new Astrix music in the works. So you can expect a brand new experience on my Psy-Fi set this year.
And of course I’m working on the Psy-Fi official compilation, it’s going to be a mixed CD, part of a triple CD compilation – all unreleased music, with music from Burn in Noise, Earthling, Ajja, Tristan, Sonic Species and many more.

If you would create a list of things you definitely want to achieve or experience in your life, what would be your number 1?
It’s not really under my control, but the thought of us humans making contact with an alien intelligence and me missing it, is something unbearable. I really want to be there when that finally happens!!!
