Interview: Ace Ventura

Ace Ventura is one of the leading and busiest DJs & artists on the progressive and psytrance scene. His music has been topping the charts and he has been touring constantly all over the globe playing in every possible venue and headlining all major festivals. He is well known for his highly popular mixes and long massive DJ sets. Ace Ventura’s new album “Paradise Engineering” was just released in Iboga Records receiving wall to wall praise and support, cementing his status as a key figure in the scene. He is also involved in three other highly successful projects: Zentura (with Zen Mechanics), Liquid Ace (with Liquid Soul) & Easy Riders (with Rocky)
First of all, how are you doing?
I am fairly well, just played a nice gig in Luzern in Switzerland last night, it’s big fun for me to play ‘locally’ as i live here since 2.5 years.
I think you have a pretty busy life… What do you do to stay energized all the time to keep up with your gigs?
Not much really, i try to eat healthy (and don’t always succeed), do some sports (doesn’t happen too often) but most of all i try to enjoy the ride (success rate usually 100%). As for staying energized at the actual gigs that’s easier, as i am lucky to be playing in mostly cool parties and events so i’m still having a lot of fun doing this after 16 years of travel.
What does a perfect day look like for you?
A day with time divided properly with all my favorite things, mainly some studio hours, time with my family, a short walk in the beautiful nature here in swiss, and at night closing the day with a good movie or a ps4 session. This perfect mix doesn’t happen as often as i would wish but i try!
What does an average week look like for you?
My week is fairly short especially if there’s a transatlantic flight involved in the weekend. So little time and so much to do….Music making, promotion work, family time, bureaucracy shit and before you know it the week is over and off to the airport. Not complaining, just saying 🙂
You have been performing at Psy-Fi several times. What are the most amazing things you experienced here?
Proud to say i played in all three official editions and from the very first one it was obvious that something special was happening. The craziest thing in every edition was actually the weather. Sometimes you feel hot under the sun and ten minutes after u need to grab a hoodie as it gets colder and starts to rain…but just for a little bit and then it’s summer again. Fullon tropical weather. And every year there’s the trademark psy fi storm…in 2015 i arrived with Astrix on the last day straight from Tokyo, right into one of the biggest storms in recent dutch memory….the whole festival was stopped and we feared that we traveled all this way for nothing…but the storm cleared, the party ended with sets by Tristan, Astrix and myself, and the vibe on the floor was unbelievable…
What do you think about Psy-Fi? Is it different from other festivals?
The scene has waited for years for a psychedelic movement in Holland and finally we got that…The vibe is different than other countries because there’s an extra sense of freedom in Holland that you don’t have in other european countries. And the location is dreamy, huge areas with beautiful lakes and so much to see. Since its in the middle of the city there is the issue of no music at night, but this turned out positive as well, as people go crazy over the day and then regenerate at night for the next blast in the morning.
What is the latest project you’ve been working on? Can we get excited for next years show at Psy-Fi already?
In the last year i’ve been mostly focused on ALPHA PORTAL my project with Astrix, we just had our debut ep released, and working on a lot of tracks towards an eventual album. But i also have very interesting Ace Ventura collaborations in store, with Gaudi, Tristan, Krumelur and Ryanosaurs.
Who has been your favourite artist you have collaborated with and who would you like to work with in the future?
I’ve been lucky to work with amazing artists and collaborate on great projects, namely with Astrix, Zen Mechanics, Rocky and Liquid soul. The scene is filled with some amazing talents so that wishlist would be far too long 🙂
If you would create a list of things you definitely want to achieve or experience in your life, what would be your number 1?
As corny as it sounds; health! Without it we can’t keep going and do what we love. Let’s all be well and continue to have fun together, and see you in the next Psy-Fi to do just that!!
